Personalized Link Request
How to craft highly personalized link requests that get responses
For SEO Manager
The Power of Personalization
Generic outreach templates get ignored. Personalized requests that demonstrate you have actually visited and understood the recipient’s site convert at 3-5x the rate of mass emails.
Research Before You Write
Spend 5 minutes on each prospect before composing your message:
- Read their most recent article — note the topic, a key takeaway, or a point you agree with
- Check their link profile — see who they already link to and what kind of content they reference
- Review their social media — find a recent post or achievement you can mention
- Identify the gap — find where your content adds value that their audience would appreciate
Anatomy of a Personalized Request
The Hook (1-2 sentences)
Reference something specific from your research. Be genuine — do not fabricate compliments.
- “Your breakdown of technical SEO audits in [article title] was exactly what I needed for a project last week.”
The Connection (1 sentence)
Explain why you are reaching out and how your content relates to theirs.
The Ask (1-2 sentences)
Be direct about what you are proposing. Mention the specific page and the value of linking to it.
The Offer (1 sentence)
State what you are offering in return — a reciprocal link, social share, or content collaboration.
Common Personalization Mistakes
- Complimenting the site design instead of the content (feels generic)
- Mentioning an article from 3+ years ago (shows you did not dig deep)
- Using their first name five times in a short email (feels automated)
- Personalizing the opening but using a generic template for the rest
