Crafting the Perfect Guest Post Pitch

A good pitch demonstrates that you understand the target site’s audience, have a relevant topic idea, and can deliver quality content. Most editors receive dozens of pitches daily, so yours needs to stand out.

Pitch Structure

Subject Line

Keep it simple and specific:

  • “Guest post idea: [Specific Topic] for [Site Name]”
  • “[Your Name] — article pitch for [Site Name]“

Opening (2 sentences)

Show familiarity with their content. Reference a specific article and what you liked about it.

Your Pitch (3-4 sentences)

  • Propose 2-3 specific topic ideas with working titles
  • Briefly explain what each article would cover
  • Mention why their audience would find it valuable

Your Credentials (2 sentences)

  • Link to 2-3 examples of your published work
  • Mention your relevant expertise or role

Closing (1 sentence)

Ask if any of the topics interest them and offer to send an outline.

Sample Pitch

“Hi [Name], I have been following [Site Name] for a while — your recent piece on [topic] was particularly insightful. I would love to contribute an article to your blog. Here are a few ideas: (1) [Title A] — covering [brief description]. (2) [Title B] — a practical guide to [brief description]. I have written for [Site X] and [Site Y] on similar topics. Would any of these work for your editorial calendar?”

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Sending identical pitches to multiple sites without customization
  • Pitching topics already covered on the site
  • Writing long, rambling pitches (keep it under 200 words)
  • Failing to include writing samples
  • Asking about link policies in the initial pitch (discuss after acceptance)

After Acceptance

  1. Deliver the draft on time and exceeding the word count requirement
  2. Include your link naturally within the content
  3. Respond to editorial feedback promptly
  4. Promote the published post on your own channels
