Before You Agree to Any Exchange

Not every link exchange opportunity is worth pursuing. Use this checklist to qualify potential partners and avoid exchanges that could hurt your SEO.

Domain-Level Checks

  • Domain Rating (DR) or Domain Authority (DA) is within an acceptable range for your site
  • The domain has organic traffic (check via Ahrefs, Semrush, or similar)
  • The domain is not flagged as spammy or part of a private blog network
  • The domain is relevant to your niche or a closely related topic
  • The domain has a clean backlink profile without obvious link scheme patterns

Page-Level Checks

  • The proposed linking page is indexed in Google
  • The page has existing organic traffic
  • The page content is relevant to your target page
  • The page does not have an excessive number of outbound links (aim for under 50)
  • The page is not a dedicated “partners” or “links” page with no real content

Technical Checks

  • The site loads properly and is not riddled with ads or pop-ups
  • The link will be dofollow
  • The link will be placed within the main content area, not in a sidebar or footer
  • The page is accessible to search engine crawlers

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Site has no real content beyond link exchange pages
  • Partner requests exact-match anchor text for commercial keywords
  • Domain was recently registered (under 6 months old)
  • Partner is unwilling to share traffic or authority metrics
  • The site is in a completely unrelated industry with no topical overlap
